About this plant

Nepenthes potting mix + pitcher-feeding fertilizer sample, made specifically for tropical pitcher plants.

This is my personal long-fiber sphagnum and perlite blend that I use for the Nepenthes I grow myself at Zacs Attack Plants. Each order also includes a small pitcher plant fertilizer sample with an instruction sheet explaining exactly how I use it. The fertilizer is NOT mixed into the soil.

MY PERSONAL NEPENTHES MIX

Approximately:

  • 50% long-fiber sphagnum moss
  • 50% coarse horticultural perlite

Measured by loose prepared volume. This creates a light, airy growing medium that holds moisture while still allowing excellent airflow around Nepenthes roots.

The potting mix contains:

  • No regular potting soil
  • No compost
  • No lime
  • No fertilizer mixed into the substrate
  • No unnecessary additives

Just long-fiber sphagnum and coarse perlite.

INCLUDES PITCHER-FEEDING FERTILIZER SAMPLE

Every order includes a small slow-release fertilizer sample intended specifically for feeding Nepenthes through their pitchers.

IMPORTANT: The fertilizer should ONLY be added to OPEN NEPENTHES PITCHERS as directed.

Do NOT:

  • Mix fertilizer into the potting mix
  • Put fertilizer around the roots
  • Sprinkle fertilizer over the soil
  • Add pellets directly into the root zone

A feeding and care sheet is included with your order with more detailed instructions.

MADE FOR NEPENTHES

This mix is specifically intended for tropical pitcher plants in the genus Nepenthes.

Great for:

  • Nepenthes Miranda
  • Nepenthes Gaya
  • Nepenthes Ventrata
  • Nepenthes Alata-type hybrids
  • Common Nepenthes hybrids
  • Nepenthes species
  • Rooted cuttings
  • Starter plants
  • Mature Nepenthes needing repotting

This is not my preferred mix for Venus flytraps, Sarracenia, or most bog-growing sundews. I sell a separate sphagnum peat + perlite carnivorous plant soil mix for those plants.

WHY THIS MIX WORKS

Long-fiber sphagnum moss helps retain moisture without creating a dense, muddy root zone. Coarse perlite creates additional drainage and air pockets around the roots. Together they create the loose, moisture-retentive but airy conditions that Nepenthes prefer.

SHIPPED DRY

The mix is shipped dry to keep it lightweight and easy to store.

Before use:

  1. Place the amount you need into a clean container.
  2. Add distilled, RO, or rainwater.
  3. Let the sphagnum fully absorb the water.
  4. Fluff the mixture.
  5. Pot your Nepenthes loosely.

Do not tightly compact the sphagnum around the roots.

WATER

Use:

  • Distilled water
  • Reverse-osmosis water
  • Rainwater

Avoid high-mineral tap water whenever possible.

AVAILABLE SIZES

  • 1 Quart - Good for a small-to-medium repotting job or several starter Nepenthes.
  • 2 Quarts - Good for several plants or larger containers.
  • 1 Gallon / 4 Quarts - Best value for collectors, propagation, larger plants, or keeping extra Nepenthes substrate available.

All sizes include the pitcher-feeding fertilizer sample and care sheet.

Hand mixed and packaged by Zacs Attack Plants.

WHICH CARNIVOROUS PLANT MIX DO I NEED?

This mix is for Nepenthes / tropical pitcher plants. If you grow Venus flytraps, Sarracenia (North American pitcher plants), or many common bog sundews, use my Bog Carnivorous Plant Mix instead.

Compare both carnivorous plant soil mixes.
